#WW - Robot Rumble Hardcover Pre-Orders!!!!!

ROBOT RUMBLE UPDATE:

It's almost time, everyone! Robot Rumble will be coming out OH SO VERY SOON!

I wanted to try some new things this time around. Here's the run-down:

Signed hardcover copies are now available in the store!!!!

Right now, the only way to get a hardcover copy is to pre-order it through the webstore. All pre-orders will arrive during the week of May 16th.

Pre-ordering will close on May 1st at 11:59 PM. If you see me at school, there's an option for you to pick it up from me, in person. If you need it shipped to you, I've got you covered, as well.

Robot Rumble will be the first Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve novel to have a hardcover release! Since it's a special occasion, I wanted to mark it with alternate artwork.. Graphic designer Katie Gill did a TREMENDOUS job of bringing Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve to life!

If, however, waiting until May 16th is simply out of the question, you can pre-order the Kindle version right now and it will be delivered to your device the moment April 30th arrives.

WRITING NEWS:

It's happening, people!!!! AGENT DARCY AND NINJA STEVE IN...ROBOT RUMBLE WILL BE COMING OUT IN 26 DAYS! I've been spending a ton of quality time with this book and I can't wait to be able to share it with all of you.

READING NEWS:

I have been reading a TON of graphic novels lately. I'd love to recommend them publicly, but some of my readers happen to be of a much younger age and I really don't feel comfortable recommending specific titles since they all contain really coarse language, graphic violence, and many other not-so-family-friendly aspects. Needless to say, most of them are sci-fi, some of them are horror, and all of them have been awesome.

WORKOUT NEWS:

8 Minutes of Abs
30 seconds of crunches
30 seconds of planks
30 seconds of bicycle crunches
30 seconds of right side plank
30 seconds of left side plank
30 seconds of flutter kicks
30 seconds of Russian twists
30 seconds of mountain climbers

-Do all exercises, then go back to the top and do them again. If you feel like making it 12 minutes of abs, go wild and do the whole set a third time. Go you!

MUSIC NEWS:

My two favorite musicians are Glen Phillips and Frank Turner. Frank delivers the "let's rock!" music and Glen delivers the "reflect and mend your broken ways" music.

This new Glen song, "Grief & Praise," is equally heartbreaking and inspiring. It's about trying to make the best of your situation and remembering that even if you're feeling down, you're still alive and that's something to celebrate.

A Rare Saturday Update!

I could have saved this for Monday, but I love this newletter so I'll go ahead and post the news today! This month, Laugh Riot Press has featured an interview with me about my writing process, my imagination, and the short stories that I wrote while I was in elementary school. The questions were fantastic and I had a ton of fun answering them.

For anyone who's also looking to try out their hand at self-publishing, the Laugh Riot Newsletter contains an amazing selection of articles from authors all around the web every month. I'd highly recommend signing up for it: I've been learning a ton from the past issues of the newsletter.

Fair Warning: Some of the authors and books in this newsletter cover mature topics, so please know that while my work is certifiably clean and for all ages, not everything featured in this newsletter is.

ROBOT RUMBLE UPDATES:

I have wrapped up my 6th draft of Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Robot Rumble!

The 7th draft will be the final draft!!!!!!!!!!

LIFE UPDATES:

I'm on Spring Break! While some years I've gone a-wandering in the US, this year I'm focusing on all of the writerly tasks that are tougher to take care of when I'm also teaching all day long, including buckling down to get the final version of Robot Rumble ready to go.

That being said, it's not like I've been trapped in one place. I've been out and about, getting bbq tacos at Smoke & Barrel, meeting my mom for lunch at a great gastropub (dad was working!), FaceTiming with my brother who lives in San Francisco (that's virtual traveling, so it totally counts!).

YOUTUBE UPDATES:

My YouTube channel is growing, people! I've added my reading of chapter 2 of Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Tiger Trouble!

#MondayBlogs: YouTube Channel, Instagram, New Review!

WRITING NEWS:

I've started recording videos of myself reading Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Tiger Trouble! I'm posting them on youtube, so check them out and go ahead and subscribe to my channel.

My students all know what it's like to hear me reading out loud, so this is nothing new to them. But maybe it's new for you! You can watch and listen to chapter 1, right here:

Also, there's a new review of Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Tiger Trouble! The Book Forums is run by Meagan, who had some amazing things to say about Tiger Trouble!

Here's one of my favorite lines:

"The humor is on point, the adventure is fun, and the world is silly but explained."

Thank you, Meagan, I'm thrilled that you had a fun time reading. (And something tells me that you'll be receiving a review copy of Robot Rumble! in the near future.)

READING NEWS:

I finished reading Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass (which I learned is actually titled Northern Lights in other markets). I put the book down and thought, "Iorek Byrnison is the greatest bear of all time." Follow me on GoodReads to see more books that I'm reading! (And maybe you'll find a title you didn't know about before!)

WORKOUT NEWS:

10 push-ups (diamond push-ups for an extra challenge if you want)
10 crunches
10 surrenders while holding an 8 lb weight in each hand

Repeat that cycle ten times. The constant motion of getting up on your feet, then lowering yourself to the ground means that you're going to sweat a lot.

MISC NEWS:

I (finally) created an instagram account! I'll be taking pictures of the books I'm reading, the places I'm visiting, and anything else I deem fun enough to post.

#WW : Goodreads Giveaway Update & Miss Peregrine's Movie Trailer

GOODREADS GIVEAWAY:

The Tiger Trouble! Goodreads giveaway was a smashing success! Over 600 people entered to win a signed copy and the 5 lucky winners were selected on Monday! Congratulations to the winners!

I'll be running another Tiger Trouble giveaway very soon, so keep checking back for updates.

MOVIE TRAILER TIME:

I read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children a while back and had an excellent time as the adventure unfolded. It was surprisingly gory in the beginning, then pulled back as the pages went on. At its heart, the novel is both difficult to describe and easy to enjoy. If I say too much about its genre, a lot of the intrigue slips away, so I'll just stop talking about it so you can run off and start reading it.

Today I saw the trailer for Tim Burton's movie version of the novel. Here it is, if you haven't seen it yet:

Now that you've seen it, I can say that, like most books that get turned into movies, there are some very distinct differences that you'll notice right off the bat. I'm sure the internet is on fire with the collective anger of the fanboys and fangirls, so it's perhaps best to let them hash it out.

I'll be keeping an eye on the reviews when it comes out in September. And I'll be reading the second book in the trilogy one of these days.

Your thoughts?

-Grant

WRITING NEWS:

-Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Tiger Trouble! just got another fantastic review!

Macy <3 Stories wrote:

When I was little, I wanted to be a secret agent. And a ninja. I am not kidding. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw both agent and ninja in just one book title. I had a feeling this was going to be a fun-to-read book. And I was right.

READING NEWS:

I'm one of the few YA fantasy fans on Earth who hasn't read The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. I started it this week and I'm loving it. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get to it: my friend Bill told me about it when we were in middle school, and here I am at the age of 30...

WORKOUT NEWS:

Of all the workouts I did this week, the one I liked best was simply using the fitlb Tabata Timer in order to do 4 minute bursts of the following:
-Mountain Climbers
-Push-Ups
-Planks
-Frog Crunches
-Burpees

Monday Funday!

WRITING NEWS:

-Robot Rumble's latest draft is currently the very capable hands of editor Ashley Davis. Once her comments come in, it'll be time for me to tune things up for the final draft. I cannot wait to share Robot Rumble with all of you on April 30th!

READING NEWS:

-I finished reading Catherynne M. Valente's The Girl Who Soared Over Fairyland and Cut the Moon in Two. Her imagination is unreal and her descriptive writing will blow your mind. I fell head-over-heels in love with the first novel of the Fairyland novels and this book is another worthy entry in the series.

WORKOUT NEWS:

Monday's workout was...

10 Burpees
10 Mountain Climbers
10 Squats
Repeat those three exercises, in that order, 10 times. Then fall down and pour water on your face.

MUSIC NEWS:

I can't get enough of this song by Ra Ra Riot.

Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss

It's Doc Seuss's b-day, hurrah and hurray!
To help celebrate this fantastical day,
I made this here movie, to speak and to say:
The Doc is a winner, his stories are true
They reveal worldly knowledge, to me and to you.
Through cartoony drawings, with colors and rhymes,
He walks us through lessons and wonderful times.
Here you go, readers, click and enjoy
This Seussian super-tale, read by a boy.

Fitness Update

When I was in college, I stopped taking care of myself. Years of martial arts practice, miles on the treadmill, and long sets of push-ups went right out the window. The dining hall food I chose to eat was basically fast food: buffalo chicken sandwiches, greasy slabs of pizza, cheesesteak subs. By the start of sophomore year, I had gained over 30 pounds.

I made a decision to turn things around. I went running with one of my roommates two nights a week. I stopped drinking soda entirely. I started going to the gym after class. I stopped eating at the Chipotle that was 5 minutes away from my apartment.

By the end of my sophomore year, I had fought off 20 pounds and was back to fitting into my old clothes. It took a lot of sweat and time, but it worked. Since then, I've spent a ton of time trying to maintain my fitness.

I haven't been perfect about it, but I've never gone back to that original weight from sophomore year.

Every now and again, I'm going to check in and post one of my workouts here. Maybe you'll give one a try!

One of the best tools I've been introduced to is the Fit LB Tabata Timer.

Here's what you do: you pick an exercise. When the timer turns green, it means you do that exercise for 20 seconds without stopping. Then, the timer will turn red and you take a 10 second break. You'll do that 20 second burst for a total of 8 times and then that's one full round.

Today I did one full round of each of the following exercises:

-Mountain Climbers

-Burpees

-Planks

-Push-Ups

I'm definitely feeling the burn!!!

Robot Rumble: Coming Soon!

Ok, world!

Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve are about to return for their second adventure!

The Kindle version is now available for pre-order and it will be delivered to your devices the moment April 30th arrives. Unfortunately, there's no good way for me to set-up a pre-order for the paperback copy, but rest assured that it will also be available on Amazon on April 30th!

I also think I have found a suitable villain for book 3. Here, behold the beast that is Harley the Cockatoo:

Required Reading: "No, Reading in NOT an Option"

Shannon A. Thomspon writes awesome dark fantasy YA (and right now one of her books is free on Kindle). She's also been cool enough to host two guest articles that I've written.

Her blog is also a goldmine for writers and writers-in-training.

This week, she posted a priceless blog on how you can't be a good writer without being a reader.

You'll find some great insight, such as:

Reading is the foundation of writing. Much like how crawling helps a child learn how to walk, then run, and so on, reading helps a writer learn how to form sentences, structure a plot, and introduce something new and interesting to the market.

Go read the whole thing. You'll be glad you did!

TIGER TROUBLE GIVEAWAY!

If you're a member of Goodreads, I have cool news. (And if you're not a member of Goodreads, it's like facebook for readers! Sign up and then add me as a friend!)  Between now and March 13th, you can enter into a drawing to receive an autographed copy of Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Tiger Trouble!

You can get there by following the link on the right-hand side of the blog page, or you can follow this link.

There will be five winners selected and I hope that you'll be one of them.

Stellar Review of Tiger Trouble! by Bookworm for Kids

Must Read: Gene Luen Yang's Speech!

Gene Luen Yang is the author of the graphic novel American Born ChineseHis story, intended for young reads and older readers alike, is one of the most talked-about graphic novels in recent years.

Gene Luen Yang was just appointed National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. Over at BoingBoing, his entire acceptance speech is posted.

Here's a sample of it that I absolutely love:

When my editor Mark Siegel called me up in October to tell me that I would be appointed National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, I freaked out. I was really excited, but I also wondered, what exactly is an ambassador?
I knew ambassadors wore fancy suits and fancy medals, but what exactly do they do?
I had a few e-mail exchanges with my predecessor Kate DiCamillo and she was incredibly helpful. I also turned to that source of answers that all nerds turn to in times of need: comic books.
Comic books don’t have the answers to all of life’s questions, but they certainly have most of them. And the comic book answer to the question, “What is an ambassador?” is a lady that we all know and love:
Wonder Woman.

The speech is an amazing look at what it's like to grow up being Chinese American, how his life as a teacher taught him to build walls and then break them down, and how reading taught him to get over his hatred of basketball.

People, this is required reading. Get going!

Another Awesome Review of Tiger Trouble!

Blogger Chris Pavesic just posted an excellent review of Tiger Trouble! I loved that Chris went in-depth with the characters and gave his readers a few sample passages from the book.

About Nora and Steve, Chris says,

"With Steve and Nora, Goodman has created a realistic pair of siblings. They know each other’s weaknesses, they know how to push each other’s buttons, but at the same time, they obviously care about each other"

And then Chris also has a great line about Darcy:

"She is not competing with the record of an older sibling at the school; she is competing with herself."

LOVE IT!

Check out the full review here. (HINT HINT: There will also be a new interview appearing soon!)

New Interview!

I did a really fun interview over on Today We Did.

I want to add that Sara was the VERY FIRST Australian to have a copy of Tiger Trouble! AND the very first blogger to interview me. It's an honor!

They started out by calling Tiger Trouble "an engaging, action packed spy and ninja book perfect for middle to upper primary school children." It only gets better from there!!

Hit the link to find out more about what I love to read, how being a teacher has influenced my writing, and why my students are some of my biggest fans!

Pixar is the Best

Sometimes, when my imagination needs a good spark, I pull up a Pixar animated short. The teams who make these things are masters of storytelling. Within a minute, you'll know who your characters are, what they want, and you'll also get a nice dose of whimsy and wonder.

When I first saw PRESTO!, I laughed until I cried.

My new favorite, though, is LA LUNA. I have no idea how I missed this one, but when I saw it today, it put a HUUUUUUUGE smile on my face.

Take a few minutes, right now, and watch it. It will be the best thing you see all week, guaranteed.
