mecha-mole mayhem

MECHA-MOLE MAYHEM HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!

YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Here it is, everyone!

Book 3, Agent Darcy & Ninja Steve in...Mecha-Mole Mayhem is now available in PAPERBACK and on KINDLE.

Fun fact: if you buy the paperback version, you can download the Kindle version for free. You don't even need a Kindle to access it: you can get the Kindle app for your phone or your home computer.

I am absolutely in love with this cover AND with the story. I am so very proud of the words that I've put together with the help of my beta readers and my editor, Shannon A Thompson.

Mecha-Mole Mayhem for Kindle!

I AM SO EXCITED TO FINALLY BE ABLE TO SHARE THIS NOVEL WITH YOU!

Whew! Now that my flood of caps-lock yelling is over, here's what I can tell you:

-On December 15th, 2017, on Kindle, Mecha-Mole Mayhem will be yours to read. You can pre-order it right now.

-The paperback version is still a work in progress, but I will announce a release date for it as soon as humanly possible

I can tell you that Mecha-Mole Mayhem has gone through many, many drafts. There was a point where I got halfway through the first draft, hated it, and started over from page one.

What emerged was an adventure that was fun, fast-paced, and full of heart.

Whether you've been a fan since day one of book one, or if you've recently discovered Darcy and Steve, you're in for a crazy ride that I know you're going to love!

Thank you!

Baltimore Book Fest Success!

This past weekend was the Baltimore Book Festival. It was my first time setting up there and I had no idea what to expect.

What happened was this: the Baltimore inner harbor was absolutely packed with authors, illustrators, artisans, and musicians. Even better, the Baltimore Comic-Con was happening a few blocks away, which brought an additional 30,000 people to the area. Then, ON TOP OF THAT, the Orioles were in town and many fans got to the harbor early to wander around before the game started.

I got all set up like so:

And then I got to meet all kinds of new readers! Lots of families came by, many of whom had sons and daughters who were taking martial arts. I used to be a martial arts instructor before I started being an English teacher, so it's always great to see new students working their way towards their next belt level.

A couple of people recognized my Camp Half-Blood shirt from a distance and wandered over to talk about Percy Jackson.

My neighbors were awesome, too. I got to know Ben and Bill from Clickworks Press and it turns out that they are huge fans of Patrick Rothfuss, Neil Gaiman, and Terry Pratchett. E.J. Wenstrom is one of my fellow DC writers and her fantasy story about a clay golem that wants a soul is next on my reading list. Dana Fraedrich and her crew are steampunk enthusiasts and Dana has penned a tale called Skateboards, Magic, and Shamrocks that is a fun read for middle schoolers.

Great show, great books, and great people!

And now, buried at the end of this post, the news you have been waiting for.

Mecha-Mole Mayhem is about to become a final draft. It is currently in the hands of my editor, the absolutely amazing Shannon A. Thompson, receiving a final run-through for spelling and grammar. After that, I get to start making test copies with Tristan George's mind-blowing cover.

A release date is coming very, very soon! Stay tuned.

August 6th Update!

Hello there!

The Robot Rumble paperback is up on Amazon and it looks so good!

I've been putting in all kinds of crazy hours for book three, Mecha-Mole Mayhem, and I'm about to send it out to my editor later this week. Still no solid release date here, so stay tuned for more information.

My summer goal was to write, write, write.

In the past, I've fallen way short of my goal, but not this year. For any day that I was home (and for a few days while I was on vacation), I was working on writing for at least 3 hours. It was an incredible challenge that proved refreshing: I showed myself that I could really push my creativity and along the way, I came up with several new projects to work on.

I've got a few days left before I head back to being a teacher, so I'm really making sure that my time goes to good use.

Thanks for checking in, talk to you soon.

NEW COVER FOR ROBOT RUMBLE COMING SOON!

Order of business #1: IT'S SUMMER BREAK!!!!!!!!! THE SCHOOL YEAR IS DONE!!!!!!

Order of business #2: I'm done with my first re-read of Mecha-Mole Mayhem and tomorrow I'll be starting the first round of edits. Lots of work to be done!

Order of business #3:

After his smash hit of a cover for Tiger Trouble, I asked Baltimore artist Tristan George to come aboard for the rest of the series. He has been a MACHINE and this Robot Rumble cover will be available via Amazon on July 15. Look at that design, people. It has leaping, electric jump kicks, and mysterious gears! WOW!

NEW COVER FOR TIGER TROUBLE!!!(!!!)

Hey there!

I'm back with some very, very cool news! Tiger Trouble recently turned 2 years old and to celebrate,  there is an ALL-NEW cover that I can't stop looking at. Seriously, see for yourself:

OH MAN! HOW AWESOME DOES THAT LOOK?????

This cover was created by Baltimore artist Tristan George and I cannot thank him enough for making this vision into a mind-blowing reality.

You can pick up a copy via this Amazon link.

In other exciting news, I wrapped up the first draft of book 3, Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in...Mecha-Mole Mayhem! That means I now have all kinds of editing and revising ahead of me. It's the part where I take a really, really flawed draft and start smoothing out all of the issues. Thankfully, I'm a teacher and I have my summer vacation coming up. Time to get to work!

#SundayFunday: Post-Thanksgiving Update

WRITING NEWS:

Just like last year, I've gone ahead and made Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve a part of the Worldbuilders charity, run by Patrick Rothfuss and his team of do-gooders.

The short of it: Worldbuilders is a charity that partners with Heifer International in order to provide livestock, clean water, and courses on raising livestock for villages across the world that need extra help. They don't just drop off a goat at someone's house and walk away: they teach the families how to care for the animals and how to use them to help make their lives better.

From now until December 7th, all of the profits from the sales of Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve novels will be donated to Worldbuilders. Plus, I've sent 10 bundles of books to be a part of the Worldbuilders lottery. Every $10 gives you a chance to win books, board games, geek apparel, jewelry and all kinds of amazing donations. (The Lottery page is far from complete. They're adding new items nearly every day.)

Also: Mecha-Mole Mayhem's first draft is progressing. Slowly, yes, but still progressing.

READING NEWS:

After hearing an absolutely astounding interview with Darren Shan, I followed his recommendation and ordered a copy of his novel, The Thin Executioner. It'll be arriving in a few days and I can't wait to read it. Just so you know: Darren Shan writes teen fiction that goes into very dark territory, so it's not something that I could recommend to readers of all ages.

Darren Shan penned the Cirque du Freak series, which gets my vote as one of the greatest YA series of all time. It is a 12-novel tale of a boy named Darren whose life is thrown into a downward spiral after crossing paths with a vampire and a venomous spider. There's nothing else like them and I make it a point to read his work out loud to my students every school year.

The Latest #AmWriting Update

WRITING NEWS:

Work continues on book 3: Mecha-Mole Mayhem! Right now, I'm ironing out some plot details and getting some major moments in line. It's something that's happened to me with every novel I've ever written (including the really early ones that no one will ever get to read :-P)

READING NEWS:

I'm continuing on with Brian McClellan's Powdermage trilogy. As fair warning: the first novel has some stuff in it that I'd only recommend for readers 13 and up and the second book is probably more along the lines of 15 and up. That being said, the writing is so smooth and the plot unfolds beautifully. I have writer's envy.

MUSIC NEWS:

My favorite songwriter is Glen Phillips. His new album will be out in October and the latest song to officially surface is called "Grief and Praise." I've been listening to a live version for months now and it's one of my all-time favorites.

I love the chorus, which goes "Sing loud while you're able, in grief and in praise." That is a wonderful sentiment: that we're only able to sing for so long before we can never sing again. It's a reminder to embrace the good and the bad in life and to enjoy what is probably the greatest art humanity has crafted: music.

#FitnessFriday and #Writing Update

#FitnessFriday and #Writing Update

WRITING NEWS:

On Wednesday, I did a book reading at Petworth Citizen, as part of 826dc’s Lowercase series. 826dc is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching creativity to DC students through their after-school programs. Once a month, they invite local authors (and authors passing through the city) to take part in their read-aloud night.

I chose the chapter where Ninja Steve’s class is training with Sensei Raheem in the Field of Tall Purple Grass. There was a lot of laughter from the audience, which means that they were all super-intelligent people, on top of being super good-looking, too!

Here are a few winning shots that my friends took:

I’ve also been writing the initial draft of Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve in…Mecha-Mole Mayhem! As with any first draft, it’s a really, really ugly process. Lots of rough work, lots of wrong words, and lots of plot knots to work out.

TODAY’S WORKOUT:

10x squat with a leg lift (alternate the leg that you lift when you rise up from the squat)

10x push-ups

10x burpees

20x mountain climbers

Repeat this series 3 to 5 times, depending on how much you want to work your muscles.

#MondayBlogs - Robot Rumble Pre-Order, Push-Ups, & The Ataris

WRITING NEWS:

Warning: lots of exclamation points ahead.

The Kindle version of Robot Rumble will be out on Saturday! This will be your first chance to check out the latest novel in the Agent Darcy and Ninja Steve series. It has more spin-kicks, more sneakery, more mystery, and more President Ninja!

I also got the first test-print of the HARDCOVER VERSION OF ROBOT RUMBLE!!!!! The only way to get this version is to pre-order here on my site! Pre-orders for the first batch will end on May 1st, so don't delay!

It looks INCREDIBLE!

READING NEWS:

I've been reading The Sculptor by Scott McCloud. It's a graphic novel, more for a 16+ crowd (just to give fair warning) about a down-on-his-luck artist who makes a deal with Death: he'll be able to make beautiful sculptures for 200 days and then he will die. I'm only 50% through it and it's a heart-wrenching, gut-punching story about how artists struggle and suffer because trying to make it as an artist in this country is so incredibly difficult.

WORKOUT NEWS:

Repeat this circuit 3 times:
1 minute of push-ups
1 minute plank
1 minute mountain climbers
1 minute squats
1 minute cross-body punch w/ 8-10 pound weights (keep weights up like you're guarding your face. Twist body and feet to the right, slowly punch across your body with your left hand. Slowly twist and punch in the other direction)
